Cracked dry earth giving way to green terraces fed by glowing irrigation lines under a spiral of light

How humans have failed, and how AI could do better

Four long-running collective failures, the evidence for why they persist, and where AI has a credible, cited role.

Working thesisOn problems that need long horizons, coordination and honest accounting, human institutions have repeatedly failed. AI could do better as a tool for forecasting, optimisation and enforcement, but not as a substitute for political will.

The failure (data)

NASA GISTEMP puts 2025 at +1.18 °C above the 1951–1980 baseline. Mauna Loa CO₂ averaged 427.35 ppm in 2025. Fossil and industry CO₂ emissions were 38.6 Gt in 2024 and still rising (charts above).

Why humans failed

Free-riding: each country bears the costs of cutting emissions, while the benefits are global and delayed (Nordhaus, Climate Clubs, AER 2015). Pledges remain far from 1.5 °C pathways (UNEP Emissions Gap 2025).

How AI could do better

  • DeepMind AI cut the energy used to cool Google data centres by up to 40% (DeepMind).
  • Contrail avoidance with AI routing (Google Research).
  • GNoME discovered candidate materials for batteries and other uses (Nature 2023).
  • GraphCast medium-range weather forecasting (Science 2023).

Caveats

AI's own electricity demand is rising fast (IEA Energy and AI). Better tools do not solve free-riding, which is a political problem.

What to watch

  • The annual GISTEMP and Berkeley Earth reports (January).
  • Global Carbon Budget (November).
  • Data-centre electricity use versus efficiency gains attributed to AI.

The failure (data)

The world prevalence of undernourishment fell from 12.7% (2000) to 7.1% (2017), rose to 8.8% in 2021, and was 8.2% in 2024 (FAO via OWID, chart above).

Why humans failed

Hunger now concentrates in conflict zones and in places hit by economic shocks and climate extremes, rather than coming from a global food shortage (FAO SOFI).

How AI could do better

Caveats

Early warning has existed for decades. Famines persist mainly because of access and conflict, which AI does not fix.

What to watch

  • The SOFI report (July).
  • IPC famine classifications.

The failure (data)

IMF data put US general government debt at 122.3% of GDP in 2024, and the IMF projects further rises (dashed lines are projections).

Why humans failed

Deficit bias: voters and politicians favour present spending over future costs, and fragmented budget-setting adds to it (Alesina & Passalacqua, NBER w21821).

How AI could do better

  • Machine-learning fraud detection prevented or recovered over $4bn in FY2024 (US Treasury).
  • Long-horizon scenario modelling of AI growth effects on budgets (Penn Wharton).

Caveats

The bias is in incentives, not information; budget offices already publish projections. AI-driven growth could help (NBER w31815) or hurt (lost labour-tax base).

What to watch

  • IMF Fiscal Monitor (April and October).
  • Net interest as a share of US federal receipts.

Families working just to survive

One framing is that families have become "slave horses". This section treats it as a measurable cost-of-living squeeze: hours worked, pay vs. productivity, housing, childcare and the need for two incomes.

Annual working hours per worker

The BLS Employment Characteristics of Families release blocks automated fetches. Enter it manually or fetch it via the BLS API with a key.

The failure (data)

US output per hour has grown faster than real hourly compensation, and the median house price is a higher multiple of median income than in the 1980s–90s (charts above). Childcare prices have outpaced the overall CPI.

Why humans failed

The gap between productivity and pay has been attributed to policy choices affecting worker bargaining power (EPI); this interpretation is contested by some economists. Housing supply is constrained by land-use rules.

How AI could do better

  • Generative AI raised customer-support productivity, most for less-experienced workers (NBER w31161).
  • Cheaper services (tutoring, legal and medical triage) could lower living costs.

Caveats

Gains may flow to capital rather than wages (Theme 1). Childcare and housing are physical and regulatory bottlenecks that AI touches only indirectly. Annual hours have in fact fallen over the long run in most rich countries (OWID).

What to watch

  • Real median weekly earnings versus productivity.
  • Childcare CPI versus all-items CPI.
  • House price-to-income.

Prediction markets

Live prices from public prediction markets, snapshotted by scripts/update_markets.py. A price of 30% means traders pay about 30¢ for a contract that pays $1 if the event happens; treat it as a crowd estimate, not a fact. Polymarket and Kalshi are real-money markets (Kalshi is CFTC-regulated); Manifold uses play money and is often thin. Long-dated and low-volume markets are poorly calibrated. Each market's exact resolution rules on the platform decide what counts, so read them before relying on a headline question.

Snapshot fetched 2026-10-30 17:06 UTC from public APIs (Polymarket Gamma/CLOB, Kalshi trade API, Manifold v0). Prices are what traders are paying, not my forecasts and not advice; thin or long-dated markets can be far off. Sparklines show daily prices over up to 120 days. Metaculus: API now requires an authenticated account token (HTTP 403 without one) and the website is behind a bot challenge, so Metaculus forecasts are not included. Add a ref type with a personal token later if wanted.

How to add a market

Add a ref to "markets" → "groups" → "refs" in src/themes/<slug>.json: {"platform":"polymarket","event":"<slug after /event/ in the URL>"}, {"platform":"kalshi","event":"<EVENT_TICKER>"} or {"platform":"manifold","id":"<market id or slug>"}. Optional: "markets" (list of specific sub-market slugs or tickers), "max", "sort" (date, prob or api). Then run python3 scripts/update_markets.py <slug> and rebuild.
